Old Town
famous astronomer's district
The Old Town, as the name suggests, is the oldest area of Gdańsk, often confused with the neighboring and more popular Main Town. Church of St. Catherine is the oldest parish church, in the crypts of which rests an outstanding citizen of Gdańsk – astronomer, brewer and city councilor – Jan Heweliusz. The tower of the church houses the Museum of Tower Clocks and a lesser-known vantage point.
Behind the copper there is another church – St. Bridget. It owes its fame to the amber altar and being the “embassy” of Solidarity.
Right next to it stands the Great Mill on the Radunia River – the largest industrial facility in Europe in the 14th century, currently the seat of the Amber Museum. From here, it is only a few steps to the Old Town Hall – a Renaissance building where you can admire the original interiors. About 2 hours.

Today it is a new place on the cultural map of Gdańsk, industrial spaces are filled with art galleries, clubs, bars, there is also one of the newest vantage points in Gdańsk Crane M3, from which there is a view of the entire shipyard. On the premises of the former Imperial Shipyard, there is the Imperial Harbor, from where you can go on a cruise on a replica of a historic gallar boat and visit the shipyard “from the inside”.
During the walk, it is worth visiting the European Solidarity Centre. The permanent exhibition is devoted to the history of Solidarity and the changes it influenced in Central and Eastern Europe. Duration from 2 to 4 hours.
